Recovery (cursos)
If you lose 3+ for a serious offence, you can take a 12-hour "Curso de Sensibilizaci贸n y Reeducaci贸n Vial" at an authorised driving school to recover up to 6 (capped once every 2 years, max 2 recoveries in lifetime).
For less serious (no loss of points) infractions, "Cursos de Conducci贸n Segura" gives +2 bonus points after 3 years of licence holding.

EU licence 鈥?what happens
- EU driving licences are valid in Spain without exchange until your 2-year residency confirms.
- After 2 years as a resident in Spain you must exchange to Spanish licence; your EU points convert.
- Until exchanged, points from Spanish infractions on EU licences can't be tracked 鈥?but Spain may refuse to renew or confiscate the EU licence for repeated offences.
- Non-EU licences need a Spanish licence after 6 months residency. Until then, you may legally drive with home licence + IDP (IDP from your home country's automobile association, not the rental counter).
Limitations
- Points are subject to court appeal; fines can be reduced. This tool gives baseline fines; appeal can halve them.
- Categorisation of infractions (grave / very grave) is set by Ley de Tr谩fico. Local governments can adjust by-law fines.
- If you're a tourist (under 6 months residency), points are not added to any licence you own 鈥?only the fine applies. But for EU residents temporarily here, Spain sends the fine to your home state which then deducts points.
FAQ
Can I lose all 12 points at once? Yes 鈥?drink-driving (0.60+ mg/l), drug driving, or reckless driving with hit-and-run can zero your licence. Recovery requires full course + psych test.
What about +2 for being clean? After 3 years without losing points you start at 14. Up to +4 if you take a defensive driving course.
